Inside BOOKED: Creating a New Chapter of Lola’s Library for Virgin Voyages

For many Virgin Voyages sailors, Lola’s Library has become one of the most memorable entertainment experiences at sea. Hidden inside a mysterious cabaret tucked within a library, the show invites guests into a world of music, secrets, and unexpected encounters. The line between audience and performer disappears, and each visit feels slightly different from the last.
When Virgin Voyages approached No Ceilings to develop a new production connected to that universe, the goal was not simply to create another show. The challenge was to expand a world that sailors had already embraced while ensuring the new experience could stand entirely on its own.
BOOKED became that next chapter.

Expanding the Story
Following the strong reception and high guest demand for Lola’s Library, Virgin Voyages saw an opportunity to deepen the narrative of the world guests had come to love. Sailors weren’t just attending the show. They were returning to it, talking about the characters, and embracing the atmosphere of Lola’s Cabaret as a defining part of their vacation experience.
Rather than continuing the story forward, our creative team developed BOOKED as the official prequel to Lola’s Library. The production reveals the events that shaped the cabaret and explores how the characters audiences already know first found their way into Lola’s world.
Guests discover the early stories of Lola, Dewey, and Mary, meeting new personalities along the way while uncovering the beginnings of the cabaret itself. The result is a production that both expands the universe and stands confidently on its own, welcoming returning fans while remaining accessible to first-time guests.

Designing for Life at Sea
Like all Virgin Voyages productions, BOOKED was engineered specifically for guests at sea. The show was developed for The Red Room aboard Scarlet Lady, a venue known for its flexible staging and immersive layout that allows performances to extend beyond the traditional theatre format.
Cruise entertainment presents unique creative challenges. Audiences rotate weekly, productions run for years, and guests arrive with different expectations, from those seeking a traditional theatrical experience to those eager for something more interactive and unexpected.
BOOKED was designed from the ground up to embrace the cruise environment and the possibilities of the Red Room. One of the most significant creative shifts was the venue itself. While Lola’s Library takes place in The Manor, an intimate cabaret lounge, BOOKED moves into the larger scale of the Red Room. Preserving the intimacy and aesthetic of the library inside a much bigger theatre required rethinking how the show occupied the space.
To achieve this, the creative team introduced a cascading book catwalk that extends the performance space further into the audience. The design allows performers to move fluidly through the venue, maintaining the immersive energy that defines the world of Lola’s Library while taking advantage of the Red Room’s expanded technological capabilities.

Built to Stand Out
BOOKED distinguishes itself through the scale and specificity of its production design. The show features our first-ever original animation piece created exclusively for the production, deepening the visual world of Lola's Library that sees these characters on screen for the very first time. Emmy-winning costume designer Casey Caldwell brought that world to life through 130 costumes, each one crafted to reflect the characters, era, and atmosphere of the cabaret at its origins.
Together, these elements signal something beyond a standard cruise production — a fully realized world with the craft and intention to match its ambition.
Cabaret, Characters and Audience
At its heart, BOOKED is a cabaret. Music, dance, and theatrical storytelling combined to reveal the personalities and relationships that define the world of the library.
Throughout the evening, guests encounter both familiar figures and new characters whose stories unfold through performance. Each act contributes another piece of the narrative, gradually revealing how the cabaret and its inhabitants came to be.
The format allows performers to connect directly with the audience, blurring the line between stage and spectator. Guests are not simply watching the story - they are experiencing it from within the room where it unfolds.
A World that Can Grow
Narrative-driven entertainment creates something traditional shows rarely achieve — a genuine emotional connection between audience and world. It's the same reason a Broadway show stays with you. The characters feel real, the world feels worth returning to, and there are always corners of the story you haven't fully explored yet.
That connection is rare and invaluable. Sailors return to Lola's Library not just because the show is good, but because the world keeps pulling them back. BOOKED gives them another entry point — and opens the door to a universe that can keep expanding through new characters, new perspectives, and new productions.
We’re always building new worlds like this. If you're looking to create entertainment that resonates beyond the moment, earns repeat visits, and has the depth to grow — we'd love to build it with you.
