Inside HOTEL: Celebrity Cruises’ First Interactive Whodunit

When Celebrity Cruises asked No Ceilings to develop original concepts for their newest flagship vessel, the Celebrity Xcel, the brief was straightforward: create something that had never been done before on a ship. Not just a new show, but a new format entirely.

A New Kind of Show
Following the success of the Magellan Gold Award-winning show, Jazz Joint, aboard Celebrity Beyond, No Ceilings was brought in to push beyond what cruise entertainment typically looks like. The result is a fully interactive, narrative-driven whodunit, a live game where audiences uncover backstories, debate motives, and decide who committed the crime and why. Guests shape the story as it unfolds rather than watching it from a distance.

A Story That Doesn't Stand Still
Hotel operates as a flexible narrative system, a network of interconnected scenes each capable of standing alone while feeding into the larger story. Through mini-games and live audience decisions, the order of events shifts every night. Scenes surface in different sequences. Outcomes change based on who's in the room. Transitions have to reset within seconds, and the story has to stay coherent while staying in motion.

Built for The Club
Hotel was designed specifically for The Club aboard Celebrity Xcel, a two-story, in-the-round venue that puts the audience at the center of the action. With no distance between the cast and the crowd, every audience decision is immediate and felt by everyone in the room. That proximity is what makes the format work, and it comes with real operational demands. Rotating audiences, limited rehearsal windows, and shared cast members across multiple shows on the ship all require a level of consistency that interactive formats rarely provide naturally. Hotel was built to hold up under all of it.

Comedy, Spectacle, and Gameplay
Hotel delivers on the scale Celebrity audiences expect. Bold musical numbers, specialty acts, and sharp comedic writing give the show its energy, while the gameplay earns its place by being woven into the storytelling rather than added on top. The cast navigates multiple versions of the story simultaneously, responding to audience decisions while keeping pacing, clarity, and character intact throughout.

A Format Built to Evolve
Because no two performances are the same, Hotel creates something most productions rarely offer: a genuine reason to come back. Each visit brings a different combination of reveals, sequences, and outcomes, deepening engagement over time. For Celebrity, it introduces a new model of entertainment at sea. For No Ceilings, it reinforces a core belief that interactive, narrative-driven performance and large-scale cruise production can live within the same show.
